Abstract | To improve the cyclization of diethyl - 2,2' - iminodibenzoate to diethyl - 1,8 - carbazole carboxylate, catalytic Pd(OAc)2 was used in the presence of stoichiometric Cu(OAc)2. This cyclization is a crucial step in the synthesis of carbazole based sensory molecules. Our thought was to reduce the cost of the synthesis by replacing Cu(OAc)2 with a co-oxidant that was capable of oxidizing Pd(0) back to Pd(II). Other co-oxidants included were H2O2, KMnO4, KIO3, FeCl3, and I2, with the most effective co-oxidant being potassium iodate. |
